what is a “monitrice”?

A Monitrice is a hybrid between a doula and a midwife. She offers more thorough counseling and clinical support than a doula as she can take your blood pressure, listen to your baby’s heart rate, and assess cervical dilation and rupture of membranes. She can help you make an informed decision about when to travel to your place of birth. Once there, she will provide physical, emotional, educational, and advocacy support. When you come home, she can help you weigh your baby and assess your bleeding making sure you are both in the normal range. As the name states, a Monitrice can offer more “monitoring” than a doula. However, she is not a midwife and, therefore, she does not catch babies or diagnose conditions.

A Monitrice is an ideal option for those who are…

• Planning for a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)

• First time birthing people who would like to stay home as long as possible or are concerned about arriving at the hospital too early

• Someone who wanted to birth at home or a birth center, but for financial or medical reasons could not access

• Someone who has suffered previous losses or traumatic childbirths and could use extra support and reassurance throughout the process

birth photography

Birth is one of the most precious and powerful transitions that humans experience. Oftentimes birth feels intense and even a little bit dreamy! I use photography to quietly document your story and capture those important memories so you can remember your power, your journey, and those first golden moments of meeting your child. Typically, I am able to both take photos/video and support you as a doula!

classes & workshops

FOR EXPECTING FAMILIES: I teach a variety of evidence-based classes for childbirth, postpartum, and newborn care to help you feel confident and knowledgeable about your options during your birth and postpartum. These include classes that prepare you for childbirth, birthing again, VBACs, and postpartum (healing and newborn care). Private and group classes available!

FOR ASPIRING BIRTHWORKERS: I am offering a full-spectrum doula training to colleges, universities, and local groups. Contact me if you are interested in bringing a doula training to your community!

Accompaniment for Reproductive Experiences:

[Includes: fertility, birth, postpartum, miscarriage, & abortion support]

As humans, our reproductive experiences are formative; they shape us. Within our country, they can be difficult to navigate alone. In my role as a doula, I’m here to accompany, inform, and celebrate you as you walk your path. It’s your body, your story - I’m here to help you prepare and heal on your terms!

This kind of support is quite individualized. Reach out and we can have a conversation.

Testimonial from a virtual client: “I don’t know if I have words to express how grateful I am that Hana was part of our birth team even though she couldn’t be with us physically during the birth of our first son. As first-time parents, pregnancy and birth comes with a high degree of unknowns. Add to that, giving birth during a time of historical uncertainty, and ever changing regulations due to Covid-19, choosing Hana as our doula was monumental to our peace and wellbeing. During my pregnancy, Hana was an invaluable sounding board helping me feel calm, confident, and prepared even with the world around us in chaos. While she wasn’t allowed in the hospital with us, she was still very much present throughout the whole birth. Through text, calls and FaceTime she helped us navigate decisions, strategize positions, and coach me through the hardest contractions. I know my husband felt like he had a teammate to call on when he didn’t know how to support me, and I will always remember her voice in my ear coming from FaceTime, reminding me to breathe deeply and relax into each contraction. I don’t think I could have had the birth experience I did without Hana’s support. As well, Hana’s wisdom has been a guide during the first weeks of caring for a newborn and tending to my post-pregnancy body.”
